I've been messing around in the Arts all my life, working in many directions. Music, writing, painting, photography, recording & food. I have no preference. These images are concept pieces, begun like paintings, with general decisions about what I want to say and what visual elements I want to use to say that. Then I go out and collect the elements photographically. This required hundreds of images of birds in flight in all positions in the image frame, many trips out to catch land forms in early morning fog, a collection of textures and colors, words, etc. This process takes years. An image grows and changes along the way. Assembly was done in a slide copier simply because I started these images in the 80's before digital technology landed on my desk. These images have taken other steps in Adobe Photoshop. I used to favor using alphabet soup noodles to make my words. What a change to a computer with a couple hundred selected fonts! I reconsidered pallets and shapes, added words in some, and cleaned up and added details. I have never recognized any boundary between photography and painting. I move freely between them and see no reason I shouldn't combine them. Documentation of photographic reality has its place, but that's not what these images are about.

One blade of grass in a field of grass. Early morning dew. Camera lensed to take in about an inch & a quarter with very shallow depth of field on a Benbo tripod low to the ground, sliding the camera back & forth slowly, carefully, watchfully. Maybe see something, maybe get bored & do something productive, such as mowing.

Very simple, get up early, get to work before the breeze comes up. Attach an improvised plant support anyway. Then set up an improvised background support to hold a board with black velvet for a background, then a shade for the background & a diffuser for the lily & maybe a reflector. Get the exposure reading off an 18% gray card, & if I can't think of anything else to do take the picture. Then I think what can I do to make it better...

Sequim Bay. There are views here that I return to over & over.

Such-E-Qua-Ing. Bay of Quiet Waters the S'Klallams's called it. They were here 1st. They are still here. Everything's changed. Nothing's different. All our efforts will be returned to the quiet waters when we're gone. Get up early enough and you can feel the quiet.

This started out as watercolor on textured paper. At that point I had no
idea what I would do with it. The crows had something worth saying
but they needed a change of space. Notice they tend to be in pairs but not
agreeing to the exact direction to go. Ok I've said to much.
The line I put on it --
Once the truth became obvious
we made our decisions.
